Please check with your own accountants, advisors and tax preparers with regard to all deductions, tax preparation and tax advice issues.

Prior to January 2005, the IRS allowed people who donated to a qualified car donation program to take a tax deduction based on their vehicle's market value, no matter how much or how little the vehicle sold for. Determining that market value was often difficult and time consuming, which made the deduction confusing to calculate.

Since a change in tax law took effect in January 2005, the IRS has taken the guesswork out of it: your deduction is simply what your vehicle sells for. Here are some frequently asked questions about car donation.

Your deduction is what your vehicle sells for at auction, stated plainly on your receipt with no guesswork involved. If it sells for $500 or less, you can generally claim its fair market value up to $500 instead. Towing, auction, and processing costs never come out of that number, and your 1098-C reports the full gross proceeds from the sale.

You do not need a qualified appraisal at any value, because the sale price sets your deduction rather than an appraiser's opinion of what your vehicle might have sold for. You can claim this deduction only if you itemize deductions on your federal return.

How Much You Can Deduct, With Examples:

The IRS Allows The Taxpayer To Claim A Charitable Tax Deduction As Follows
  • We make donating simple. Fill out the quick form to the right (or call 1-855-278-9474) and we take care of the rest. Your vehicle is picked up, sold, and the proceeds benefit animal rescue centers, and you'll receive a tax deductible receipt.
  • If your vehicle sells for $500 or less, you can generally claim its fair market value up to $500. For example, if your car sells for $350 at auction, you can still claim a $500 deduction rather than just the $350 sale price.
  • If your vehicle sells for more than $500, your deduction is the exact amount it sold for. For example, if your vehicle sells for $6,750 at auction, that $6,750 is your deduction, stated in full on your 1098-C.

For any vehicle sold for more than $500, the exact sale amount is stated on the notification we mail you, and that figure is your charitable tax deduction. For additional detail, the IRS provides A Donor's Guide to Car Donations (Publication 4303, linked below).

Forms and Documentation For A Car Donation:

Four Simple Categories For A Car Donation

People sometimes call this a "car donation tax credit," but the IRS classifies it as a deduction, which reduces your taxable income rather than your tax bill directly. Here's how the paperwork breaks down at each sale amount:

  1. In most cases, a vehicle in the $500-or-less tier needs no extra paperwork beyond your 1098-C.
  2. If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, you'll claim the exact sale amount using your 1098-C form, which we mail to you.
  3. If your deduction is more than $500, you'll also complete Section A of Form 8283 for a non-cash charitable contribution, and attach your 1098-C to it. This applies at every value above $500, including well above $5,000, because your vehicle was sold rather than appraised.
  4. Section A is the form that applies to vehicle donations like yours. Form 8283 also has a Section B, but that section is for donated property where a qualified appraisal is required, and vehicles reportable through a sale (like the ones we sell at auction) are specifically excluded from that requirement. You'll only encounter Section B if a charity keeps and uses a vehicle rather than selling it, which is not how our program works.

According to the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, there are specific documents and record-keeping requirements for donating non-cash items. Here is a chart to help you with filing your car donation tax deduction:

Frequently Asked Car Donation Tax Questions

Frequently Asked Car Donation Tax Questions

The information below is intended to provide general information only and is not intended to be tax advice. Tax issues are individual to each donor and change year to year. Please check with your own accountants, advisors and tax preparers with regard to all deductions, tax preparation and tax advice issues.

Q: Will My Vehicle Donation Count For The Year I Sent In The Donation Form, Even If I Don't Receive My Receipt Until The New Year?

A: Yes. IRS Publication 4303, "A Donor's Guide To Vehicle Donations," states that the written acknowledgment must contain the date of the contribution. That date is the date we received your donation form, so even a form submitted on December 31st qualifies for that tax year.

Q: Does The Donation Count Toward The Year I Submitted The Online Form, Even If The Vehicle Isn't Picked Up Until The New Year?

A: Yes, for the same reason as above. The date of your donation form is what counts.

Q: Some Charities Offer Vacation Packages As Incentives To Donate. Does That Affect My Tax Deduction?

A: Yes. If a charity provides a commodity, such as a vacation package, in exchange for a car or vehicle donation, the tax receipt from that charity must state the fair market value of that commodity, and that value must be subtracted from the value of the car donation.

For example: if your vehicle sells for $1,000 at auction and the vacation package you receive has a fair market value of $400, your deduction is $600 ($1,000 minus $400 equals $600). We don't want donors to be caught off guard by a tax letter that requires subtracting the value of an incentive like this from the value of their vehicle.

How Do I Know Animal Car Donation Is A Legitimate Car Donation Program?

Animal Car Donation is a registered 501(c)(3) organization with the IRS, and your donation may qualify for a federal tax deduction if you itemize. Your vehicle is sold at public auction, which is what sets your deduction. Because the sale price establishes the number, you never need a qualified appraisal, no matter what your vehicle sells for.

Make sure to avoid car donation programs that are not registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. If you donate your car to a program that isn't registered as a charity with the IRS, your donation won't be tax deductible. Here's how our donation process works.
